Prescriber Finder makes official Medicare prescribing data easier to explore. Here’s what the numbers mean.
- Prescription fills, including refills
- A fill is an original prescription or a refill paid through Medicare Part D. It is not a count of unique patients.
- Medicare Part D, in 2024
- These records cover Medicare Part D claims for the calendar year. They do not include other insurance or cash prescriptions outside Part D, and they do not represent all prescriptions a clinician writes.
- Small counts are withheld
- CMS suppresses drug–prescriber records with 10 or fewer claims to protect patient privacy. An absent record does not necessarily mean zero prescriptions.
- How many results are included?
- The drug index includes 3,632 published brand-and-ingredient products. This website searches a stored copy of all 28,023,892 published 2024 provider-and-drug records. It combines the included products before ranking prescribers and shows the full matching prescriber count. Use Show more to continue through the list. Searches load the saved records needed for your results; they do not contact CMS. CMS-withheld records remain unavailable.
- A provider’s practice location
- State and city refer to the prescriber’s reported practice address, not where patients live. County is not a search field in this drug-level dataset. City filters narrow the prescriber list; the large total remains the state or nationwide total because CMS does not publish city drug totals.
- What your search includes
- Searches include the matching brand, generics, and other listed formulations by default. An ingredient search also includes the listed combination products containing that ingredient. The included products are shown and can be narrowed to one. A prescriber appears once, with published fills summed across the included versions. Different formulations are not assumed to be medically interchangeable. State totals include small counts excluded from prescriber records; a ≥ sign means some version totals are not published.
- Volume is not quality
- The rankings show reported prescription activity. They do not evaluate quality, appropriateness, or recommend a prescriber.
